ABOUT US > BREAST CARE CENTRE

Breast Care Centre

Our Breast Care Centre is designed specifically for women and dedicated to providing special breast care and disease management. With a holistic approach, the centre has clear aims to address all facets of breast related disorders and how it affect the society, from cancer awareness and education, screening and detection, treatment and care to post treatment support for breast cancer survivors. The centre operates in collaboration with the many services available at the hospital and offers high standards of diagnostic and treatment procedures based on many years of experience in the field of breast treatments, especially breast cancer.

Early Detection, Early Cure

To assist in screening and detection, the centre is equipped with a Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) machine. The FFDM enhances the centre’s ability in providing our Consultant Breast Surgeons with the necessary tools to enable better screening outcomes for their patients. In addition to screening mammography, the FFDM also allow the centre to offer stereotactic biopsy. This is a specialized biopsy method for mammographic detected abnormalities. The FFDM offers an accurate, computer assisted biopsy method that is superior to previous biopsy methods.

The Breast Care Centre offer various other screening and diagnostic modalities and these include:

  • Ultrasound & ultrasound guided biopsy
  • Fine needle aspiration cytology
  • Cyst aspiration
  • Stereotactic guided core biopsy
  • Sentinel Node Mapping / Biopsy – blue dye technique

The centre also provides counseling, (both by trained breastcare nurse counsellors and lay peer group support counsellors) which is arranged before, during and after the treatment. Every type of oncological rehabilitation, including advice on prosthesis and palliative care, is provided and a particular care for the diagnosis and treatment of lymph oedema is made available.

Treat to Heal

Breast cancer treatment, from surgical to adjuvant therapy typically involves a multidisciplinary team comprising surgeons, radiologists, cytologists, histopathologists, oncologists, radiotherapists, plastic surgeons, physicist and breast care nurse counselors. Reconstruction, both immediate and second stage, including nipple reconstruction has also been part of the Center’s effort in giving survivors the best possible options in care and treatment.

The success of the Breast Care Centre over the years is a reflection of the dedication and passion that is part of each member of the team and partly the reason it now serves over 4000 patients each year. With all the necessary skills and technology that is being employed by the centre, its greatest offering is still the support and hope that it gives each woman as they enter through its doors.

Breast Awareness & Education

Beyond the established annual breast cancer awareness campaign period every October, the team from the Breast Care Centre, especially the Breast Surgeons and breast care nurse counselors, are continuously involved in raising awareness and educating women in Malaysia to be more breasts aware, with talks for the public, corporate sectors and in rural areas being held throughout the year. With strategic alliances with other bodies and associations that are working towards a similar goal, there is certainly a great degree of optimism that women, especially in Malaysia will be more aware of the importance of early detection of breast cancer and with it achieve greater chances of defeating the cancer and continue with a productive fulfilling life.
